A South Florida Hood Cleaning Company Built From the Ground Up
In 2006, our founder JP took a job cleaning kitchen exhaust hoods to support himself through college. What started as a way to pay the bills became a craft he took seriously — learning every system, every code requirement and every corner other crews cut.
In 2011, he founded Five Star Hood and Detail Inc to do the job the right way. Today our crews serve commercial kitchens across South Florida, and JP still holds every job to the standard he set on day one: clean to bare metal, document everything and leave the kitchen better than we found it.
Cleaned to Bare Metal, Not Just Wiped Down
Why Restaurant Owners & Facility Managers Choose Five Star
We steam-clean and hand-scrape the hood, plenum, ductwork and rooftop exhaust fan down to bare metal. That’s the standard NFPA 96 requires and the one fire inspectors check.

Faqs
Find clear answers to common questions about our kitchen exhaust cleaning services, scheduling, safety standards, and more. Our FAQ section helps you understand what to expect and how we keep your kitchen running smoothly and safely.
Why can’t my employees clean the hoods?
NFPA 96 states, “The entire exhaust system shall be cleaned by a properly trained, qualified, and certified company or persons.” Work of this nature takes special tools, equipment, and expertise to properly and thoroughly clean.
What should I look for when hiring a company?
You should look at training, certification, reputation, and years in business. The Certified National Hood Cleaning Association certifies us as a Certified Exhaust Cleaning Specialist (CECS). We are versed in NFPA 96, the Code of Federal Regulations. We are regulated by each of these organizations to ensure we provide you with the best and safest service available.
What do you clean?
We take care of what you see in the kitchen, but most importantly, what you do not see from the roof down. We clean the entire system, starting from the exhaust housing and motor, including fan maintenance, grease bearings, and adjusting/replacing belts, making sure the motor is operating properly. Then we go down the flue into the plenum area, cleaning the system to bare metal per NFPA 96 standards. Finally, we clean the linkage for the fire suppression system, clean the filters and grease gutters, and cleaning and polishing the hood inside and out.
Why is a hood cleaning certification necessary for my business?
A certification provides documented proof to fire marshals, health inspectors, and insurance companies that your exhaust system has been maintained according to NFPA 96 standards. At Five Star Hood & Detail, we provide this documentation to help you avoid fines and ensure your insurance remains valid in the event of a claim.
How often do I need to schedule hood cleaning services?
The frequency depends on your volume and type of cooking. High-volume kitchens or those using solid fuels often require monthly or quarterly cleaning, while moderate-volume facilities may only need semi-annual service. We provide custom maintenance schedules for clients in West Palm Beach, FL, to ensure constant compliance.
How often should I schedule residential hood cleaning?
Frequency depends on how often you cook and the type of meals you prepare. Heavy use, such as frequent frying or grilling, requires more regular cleaning—typically every six months. Light use may allow for annual service, but we recommend professional inspections to determine the right schedule for your kitchen.
Can hood cleaning improve indoor air quality?
Yes. A clean hood system efficiently removes smoke, odors, and airborne grease particles. This reduces respiratory irritants and keeps your kitchen environment healthier. Families often notice fresher air and fewer lingering cooking smells after professional service.
Do you service custom or luxury residential kitchens?
Absolutely. We specialize in high-end residential systems and understand the unique requirements of custom-built kitchens. Our technicians adapt cleaning methods to protect delicate finishes and advanced ventilation designs, ensuring thorough care without compromise.
Is residential hood cleaning necessary if I rarely cook?
Even with minimal use, grease and dust can accumulate over time. Neglecting cleaning reduces ventilation efficiency. Scheduling periodic service ensures your system remains safe and ready whenever you do cook.
